BROOKWOOD CEMETERY
Established in 1852, Brookwood Cemetery is sited close to the Surrey town of Woking.
Ambitious plans by the London Necropolis Company anticipated Brookwood to hold a near monopoly on future burials in and around the capital. As Britain’s largest cemetery, two railway stations were constructed on the site with trains running direct from a purpose built terminus close to London’s Waterloo Station. Dreams were never fulfilled and much of the 220 acre site is empty or contains unmarked graves. Nonetheless, some fascinating and elaborate memorials are there to be admired, together with military cemeteries including those from the Commonwealth, USA and France.
